This draft begins with a voice memo that I made of the song back in October with just the acoustic and vocals. I later added harmonies and another acoustic guitar part, and I think I’ll play this intro on a classical guitar when I rerecord it for the tone of the nylon strings.

When the second verse starts and the full band come in, that was recorded at a rehearsal with my friends Brian (drums) and Caleb (bass) in his living room on a different day. I’ll make that transition more fluid whenever I redo the recording, but you get the point.

The vocals are not yet recorded, but the melody line is played in the piano part.

This is rough draft of an R&B style song like that of the roots. With a very simple, but effective groove with synths and an electric piano.

Taylor Neal listening: Cut from the Vine – LVL UP

This song is my inspiration for the draft i’m working on, stylistically, tonally, and in regards to the structure of the song.

This song starts with a solo acoustic part, then the same guitar sound doubles when the instrumental hook is played (a melodic figure that steps out of the major key for just a second and then resolves to the next section.) Once the song opens up and the band comes in, the washy, dry tone of the drums pairs well with the mid range-y bass picking part. During the entire intro, there is this fuzzed out guitar chord sustaining and feeding back far behind the mix, sort of pulsing with the bands rhythm (maybe side chained?) that fades out when the verse begins.

For the majority of the song, the vocal melody has an instrument playing the same melody behind it. Sometimes the acoustic guitar, sometimes an articulate electric guitar followed by the bass. This allows for the energy of the melody to have another direction influenced by whichever guitar is accompanying it.

The melodic instrumental phrase is repeated 3 times throughout the song: once at the very beginning, once after the bridge, and finally at the end of the song.

I really like the structure, transitions, tones, and lyrics of this song.
